Mynatt Minute – Campbell County game review, Knoxville Central preview
By Bill Mynatt, Radio Voice of Powell Panther Football on AM 620 – WRJZ

Playing with a separated throwing shoulder, Campbell County senior quarterback Tuffy Shoupe gave his team an early lead when he hit Isaac Phillips on a 49 yard touchdown pass just 1:29 in to the game Friday night.   The Cougar fan’s hope of a huge upset turned out to be short lived, however, as Powell quarterback Dustin McPhetridge – also a senior – would lead his team to a record scoring night, earning a 69-13 Panther victory, and a second consecutive District 3-AAA championship in the process.
After the initial Cougar score, it took just 1:59 for the Panthers to answer.  McPhetridge scored on a 70 yard run – his first of 7 touchdowns the 6’2” 229 pound signal caller would have a hand in scoring during the first half of play.  Before the first 24 minutes would end, despite only possessing the ball for only 6:37 of that first half, Powell would build a 55-13 halftime lead, and as has been the case several times this season, give way to backups for the entire second half of play.
McPhetridge has never looked better than he did in the first half against the Cougars.  His totals included 7 rushing attempts – good for 182 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground.  Through the air, he was 5 for 5, totaling 164 yards and 3 touchdowns.  His scoring runs were from 70, 15, 11, and 73 yards, with the final run coming on the last play of the half.
McPhetridge’s TD passes were from 68 yards to fellow senior Landon Wright, again to Wright from 48 yards, and 19 yards to another senior in Drake Owenby.
The other first half Panther score came on a 9 yard run by yet another senior, Dy’shawn Mobley.
Shoupe connected on a second TD pass in the first half, this time to Matthew Marshall from 30 yards away, for the final Cougar points of the half and the game.
The second half of the game was played under the TSSAA mercy rule, with the clock continuously running.  Neither McPhetridge nor Mobley played in the second half.
The Panthers added two more scores, one each in the third and fourth quarters.
The first came when Wright, filling in at corner for Darian Logan, picked off a Shoupe pass and returned it 24 yards for the score.  The final Panther touchdown came on a 7 yard pass from backup QB Hagen Owenby, who moved in from his starting wide receiver position, to senior Andrew Irby.
Freshman kicker Josh Neely was good on 7 of his 8 point after touchdown attempts on the night, while the left footed Austin Robinson knocked his only PAT kick attempt through the uprights to complete the Powell scoring for the night.  The 69 point outburst is the most points scored by a Panther team back at least to the 1963 season when complete season results have been verified.
Powell now sits at 9-0 on the regular season, 7-0 in District 3-AAA play.  With only Central left to play, the worst the Panthers could do is finished tied with Oak Ridge, who is currently 5-1 in 3AAA play with Clinton and Campbell County left on their schedule.  Powell owns the head to head tie breaker with Oak Ridge by virtue of its 21-17 win over the Wildcats back in early September.  A win this Friday would give the Panthers a second consecutive unbeaten regular season.
Campbell County drops to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in district play with Halls and Oak Ridge left on the 2011 schedule.
Powell now travels to Joel Helton Field - Dan Y. Boring Stadium in Fountain City this Friday night to take on the Bobcats.  Central currently stands at 2-6 overall, and 2-4 in district play.  The Bobcats come in to the game this week on a two game win streak, however, defeating Clinton 27-14 on September 30, and then at Campbell County 34-7 on October 7.  They were off this past Friday.
The Bobcats are playing their best football of the season at this point.  Running back/safety Cody Blanc, a University of Tennessee verbal commitment, has recovered from a nagging leg injury that limited his mobility the first half of the season.  Also a dangerous return specialist, Blanc is capable of taking the ball the distance every time he touches it.
Also of note is the fact that former Panther QB/DB Austin Byrd is now the starting quarterback for the Bobcats.  Byrd transferred from Powell to Central during pre-season practice in August.
After hosting Powell, Central will travel to Halls for the annual Battle of Black Oak Ridge in week 10.  Neither Central nor Halls are expected to receive an at large playoff bid.
Kickoff for Friday’s Panther regular season finale is scheduled for 7:30 PM.  Air time on AM 620 WRJZ is 7 PM.
Powell will enjoy an open date in Week 10 (October 28) and prepare to host a first round playoff game.
The Panthers came in to this past Friday’s game ranked #3 in Class 5A by the Associated Press, behind Columbia Central and Henry County.  Both Henry County and Powell should move up one spot when the new poll is released on Monday afternoon, as Columbia Central went down to Chattanooga Baylor 39-20 on Friday night.
