Mynatt Minute – Central Game Report
By Bill Mynatt, Radio Voice of Powell Panther Football
The Powell Panthers went to Joel Helton Field, Dan Y. Boring Stadium on Friday night looking to finish a second consecutive regular season. The team, lead by a stingy defensive effort, took care of business in defeating the Bobcats 34-0. In doing so, Powell put the wraps on its regular season schedule, pitching its second shutout of the year in the process.
Powell now stands at 10-0 overall, and finished its District 3AAA schedule at 8-0 – matching both numbers from a year ago.
The defense went in to the game with the idea of limiting Central’s speedy all purpose athlete Cody Blanc’s touches and yardage. Blanc, a University of Tennessee verbal commitment, had hurt the Panthers a year ago, nearly helping his underdog squad pull off a huge upset in that 22-20 Powell victory. Playing with a chip on their collective shoulders, the Powell defense not only limited him, but came as close to completely shutting down Blanc as they could have ever hoped for. Blanc could only manage 10 yards on 10 rushing attempts, and just 1 net yard on 3 pass receptions. For the night, the Panther defense held Central’s offense to only 106 total yards in the shutout.
While the defense played an outstanding game, the offense was also solid from beginning to end.
For the second time in his career, senior running back Dy’shawn Mobley scorched the turf of Joel Helton Field for over 200 yards rushing. On Friday, he turned his 14 carries in to 213 yards and 3 touchdowns on runs of 40, 46, and 6 yards. As a sophomore, Mobley carried the ball 12 times against the Bobcats – netting 215 yards.
“I just follow my blocking and run the football”, Mobley told me on the Panther Post Game Show on AM 620 – WRJZ, when asked about why he has had so much success playing at Central.
Powell’s other scores came on a blocked field goal attempt by the Bobcats and a run by an unexpected ball carrier.
Central’s best shot at scoring came with 5:52 to go in the second quarter as the Bobcats had the ball first and goal at the Panther 3. The defense bowed its back, however, pushing Central back to the 5 on 3 plays. On 4th and goal, Head Coach Joe Hassell opted to send former Panther kicker Carl Harris in to the game to try to cut the lead to 10 and perhaps gain some much needed momentum. Powell’s block team got a huge push on the snap, however, and senior Colby Skeen got a hand on the football. As the ball bounced away, Montario Washington was able to gain control, and took off the other way. Escorted by several Panthers, Washington beat all 11 Bobcats 92 yards to the end zone for the score.
After another blocked kick – this time a punt block by senior Zach York, Powell had the ball inside the 5 yard line and opted to go to the power set. Senior Tony Foster, normally inserted in to the formation as an extra blocking fullback, got the call and pushed forward in to the end zone from a yard out.
After closing out the regular season, Powell will enjoy this Friday as its open date week and prepare to host a first round playoff game on November 4. Powell will almost certainly be a 1 seed, but the unknown is will it be in Quad 1 or Quad 2?
The playoff brackets will be released on Saturday, November 5. Donnie Meade and I will have the brackets for you on our Saturday morning show, The District, which airs at 10 AM on WRJZ’s sister station, AM 760 WETR. We’ll also be posting the brackets at this website as soon as possible that day.
Just as it has for the last 10 seasons, AM 620 – WRJZ will follow the Panthers throughout the playoffs. Remember that kickoff time for playoff games is 7 PM, and not 7:30 PM, as is the case with regular season games. That means that air time for the Panther Pre-Game Show for playoff games will be 6:30 PM.
