Mynatt Minute – Clinton review, Campbell County preview

By Bill Mynatt, Radio Voice of Powell Panther Football on AM 620 WRJZ

The last time the Powell Panthers lost a regular season football game was in October of 2009 at Clinton Stadium.  It didn’t take long on Friday night to realize that the home standing Dragons were not going to see history repeat itself.
P    owell scored its first touchdown of the night just a minute twenty-four seconds in to the game, built a 41-0 halftime lead, and then let the backups get Friday night snaps in the second half with the clock running continuously due to the TSSAA’s mercy rule, eventually winning by the final score of 49-7.  In the process, the Panthers officially wrapped up an automatic playoff berth, and can claim a second consecutive District 3-AAA championship with a win next week over Campbell County at Scarbro Stadium on Senior Night 2011.
Powell’s opening drive took just 1:24 to go 69 yards in 4 plays, with senior running back Dy’shawn Mobley taking the ball in to the end zone from 3 yards away.  Before the half was over, the Panthers would score touchdowns on an 87 yard interception return, a Dustin McPhetridge 19 yard run, a 6 yard McPhetridge to Darian Logan pass, a second scoring run by Mobley – this time of 17 yards, and a 15 yard pass from Hagen Owenby to Landon Wright.  Josh Neely added 5 extra point kicks, and the large throng of Panther fans, who easily outnumbered those there to support the home team by 5 to 1, sent the team to the locker room with a loud ovation after the outstanding first half performance.
Powell’s final score came late in the third quarter when Montario Washington score on a 4 yard burst, and holder Justin Wood found Klay Leeper in the back of the end zone on a two point conversion after a botched snap and recovery.
Clinton’s only points were scored when Reggie Wilcox scored from 7 yards away midway through the 4th quarter after a Panther fumble deep in Powell territory.
With the win, the Panthers have already secured one of the two automatic playoff berths from 3-AAA.  With two regular season games remaining, Powell could finish no worse than 6-2 in district play and would own the head to head tiebreaker over any of the teams they could possibly be tied with.  With a win over Campbell County, the worse they could do is finish tied for the top spot, and again would own any tie breaker with a team they could finish tied with.  After Friday’s date with the Cougars, Powell will close the season at Knoxville Central on October 21, and then will be off in week 10 of the season on October 28.
Campbell County comes in to this week’s contest with an overall record of 2-5.  They are 1-4 in district play, and are coming off of a 34-7 home loss to Central.  The Cougars are led by first year head coach Justin Price and his twin brother and defensive coordinator, Matt Price.  The Price brothers moved to Jacksboro from Anderson County High, where they served as the offensive and defensive coordinators under Davey Gillum.
The playoffs begin on November 4, with the higher seeds hosting games through the semi-finals.  At this point, Powell is projected to be the top seed in Quad 2 of the playoffs.  The projections are updated on Tuesdays, and can be found on the TSSAA website at:      http://tssaa.org/d1football/wildcard.cfm?class=5A .
S    enior Night festivities will begin at approximately 7 PM on Friday.  Senior football players, cheerleaders, and band members will be honored, along with their families.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.  If you can’t make it to the game, you can hear the broadcast on radio station AM 620 - WRJZ beginning at 7.
