Karns game report, Hardin Valley preview

By Bill Mynatt, Radio Voice of Powell Panther Football on AM 620-WRJZ

The Powell Panthers got a stellar defensive effort - intercepting 7 passes and sacking the quarterback 4 times - and defeated the upstart Karns Beavers 40-20 on Friday night.  The win improves the Panther record to 6-0, 4-0 in District 3AAA, awaiting a visit from Hardin Valley Academy this Friday night for Homecoming 2011 at Powell.
Karns came in to the game considered by most as one of the surprise teams of East Tennessee so far this season.  The Beavers, who are looking for their first winning season since 1974, were 4-1 overall coming in to the game, and matched Powell’s 3-0 district mark.  Before the night was done, however, the Panthers proved to have way too many weapons on both sides of the ball for Karns.
After the teams felt each other out early on, Powell struck first, and there was little doubt where that first strike would come from. Senior Dy’shawn Mobley put the Panthers in front at the 5:12 mark of the first quarter when he broke the line of scrimmage and sprinted to the end zone on a run covering 55 yards.  Josh Neely kicked the point after, and Powell led 7-0.
Mobley would score twice more before the first half ended.
The first came at the 3:52 mark of the first quarter.  A 51 yard Darian Logan run put the ball at the Karns 15.  From that point, Mobley took the ball in the end zone virtually untouched, and Neely kicked the point after.  Powell led 14-0.
Then at the 9:46 mark of the second period, Mobley again scored on the ground from long range – this time from 45 yards away.  A snap miscue foiled the extra point attempt, and Powell led 20-0.
Karns took advantage of Powell penalties to get on the board for the first time in the game.  Relief QB Matt Nauman found D’Andre Harris on a 25 yard pass for the touchdown.  Logan Webb’s kick made the score 20-7.
Just over 5 minutes later, Powell got 6 of those 7 points back as Dustin McPhetridge called his own number, going around the left side from 6 yards out for the score.  Powell went for two, but couldn’t convert, however, and Powell took a 26-7 lead with them to the half.
The Panthers have made a habit out of scoring on its first possession of the second half, and that habit would continue to prove true in this game.
Powell returned the second half kickoff to its own 36 yard line, setting up a 4 play – 64 yard drive.  Montario Washington took the football the final 7 yards up the middle, and Neely added the point after to give Powell a 33-7 lead just 1:49 in to the second half.
McPhetridge found senior WR Justin Wood on a 13 yard touchdown pass – McPhetridge’s first TD pass of the season – at the 4:22 mark of the third, and Neely added the final Powell point of the game to make the score 40-7,  virtually putting the game away.
Karns scored twice in the last 3 minutes of the game against Powell reserves, as the Panther starters and significant contributors had long since called it a night.
The first Beaver goal line breaker came on Xavier Harper’s 24 yard run.  Webb’s kick made the score 40-14 at the 2:54 mark of the final stanza.
Then on the game’s last play, with its starters still on the field, Karns added a Tyler Stewart to Harris TD pass, this time from 23 yards out.  With the game over, the extra point was forgone, and the game ended 40-20.
Powell’s 7 interceptions were divided among 5 different Panthers.  Cornerbacks Jonathan Strozyk and Montario Washington each had two, and Colby Skeen, Brady Williams, and Dylan Sweat one each.
Strozyk’s pair of interceptions puts him in a tie at the top of both the career and single season marks for interceptions.  The junior now has 14 picks for his career, and puts him in a tie for the all time Powell lead with his head coach, Matt Lowe.  His 7 picks for 2011 also puts him in a tie with Lowe and Derek Milligan atop the record list for the most picks in a single season.
Strong safety Alan Michael Agee had 3 of the 4 Powell sacks.  The other one was executed by nose tackle Tony Foster.
Not to be forgotten, Mobley had another monster night running the football.  His 239 yards on 23 carries vaulted the senior running back past the 1,000 mark for the season.  Mobley now has rushed for 1,140 yards in 2011 with 4 regular season games and the playoffs left in front of him.  The Powell single season rushing record is held by Milligan at 2,007.
Harris had a monster night of his own for Karns, totaling 165 yards on 7 receptions to go along with his 2 touchdown catches.  Harper was the leading ground gainer for the Beavers with 45 yards on 10 tries.
With the win over Karns now squarely in the “W” column, Powell will welcome the Hawks of Hardin Valley Academy to Scarbro Stadium this week.  HVA comes in to the game off the strength of a 24-14 win at Central last Friday.  The Hawks are 4-1 overall, and stand at 3-0 in district play.  Other wins have come over Bearden in the season opener 32-0, Clinton 27-0, and Campbell County 26-20.   The lone loss of 2011 came at Heritage 38-24.
The Hawks are led by senior running back Dorian Eskridge.  The 5’10” and 170 pound running back/cornerback has rushed for 561 yards on the year, and is averaging 7 ½ yards per carry.
Air time on AM 620 WRJZ this Friday for Powell and Hardin Valley is 7 PM.
